LIP Program - A Guide for Parents
The L.I.P. is a short-term, intensive intervention program for children struggling with reading, writing or phonics. We work with children to "fill in the gaps" and teach them the strategies which will have the greatest impact on their reading/writing in addition to helping them continue their progress after the sessions have finished.
The L.I.P. is a short-term intervention because we want the children to learn and practice new
skills independently-which is more effective over the "long term" than "spoon-feeding" them.
Many of the children we work with have not yet solidified their basic literacy skills for any number of reasons. Some children have no other difficulties but may simply need to get over a "stumbling block" while others have had A.D.H.D./A.D.D or Dyslexia symptoms. Dubai based children also come to us with other language backgrounds or speak multiple languages.
The L.I.P. is an approach to supporting literacy development which uses the best techniques and practices within the Field. It was developed by two Literacy Specialists who spent many years
studying the theoretical and practical applications as well as working with a broad range of children who required intervention.
How are Children Referred?
Children are referred from any number of sources. They can be referred through a physican, psychologist, therapist, teacher or parent. Children are candidates for the Program if they do not have any long-term developmental disabilities or other more involved sensory or memory issues which would make a short-term program less effective.
The Assessment Process
All children considered for the L.I.P. must undergo a literacy assessment to find out their
independent skills/strategies and to understand their strengths/needs. This Assessment provides information about the child's prerequisite skills for literacy along with their levels of reading and writing. Essentially, it provides a starting point for developing an individualized intervention program for the child.
The L.I.P. Sessions
The L.I.P. sessions are held at Star International School (Jumeirah) from 4:00-5:00 from
Sunday to Wednesdays. Each child has 16, one-hour sessions which are held over 4 weeks.
From the assessment, a dyslexia treatment Dubai based growth Plan is developed and targets/goals are set. Each hour-long session is divided into 3 components: Reading, Writing and Word Work. There are up to 4 children in the sessions who are all working at their individual levels. The Literacy Specialist is a trained Consultant and qualified Teacher but has also had special training in the techniques of the L.I.P. Children are taught focused strategies and then guided along to practice them independently. They are assessed every second day and a progress report is given at the end of each week which outlines how they are meeting their goals/targets.
Typically, children move up 4 reading levels or more.
